Promoting the Safety of Infant Bathers

A new ASTM International standard aims to enhance the safety of infant bathers. The consumer safety specification establishes performance requirements, test methods, and labeling requirements to promote safe use of the popular products, which allow parents and caregivers to bathe newborns and infants in a reclined position.

Specifically, the standard covers sharp edges, small parts, labeling, restraint systems, structural integrity, stability, and more.

ASTM International member Julia Costello noted that the standard (F3343) was developed after a group within the organization’s consumer products committee (F15) reviewed incident data and identified a need to address incidents.

“After examining the data, a need arose to address injuries,” said Costello, a senior manager of compliance engineering with Vista Outdoor and chair of the subcommittee on infant bathers. “This specification will provide a baseline for these products moving forward in an effort to reduce incidents.”

Juvenile product manufacturers and consumers will be the primary users of the new standard.
