Standard Addresses Security Fencing for the Commercial Market

A new ASTM International standard will help owners of commercial properties make decisions on the selection and use of electric security fences.

According to Jack DeMao, ASTM International member and chair of the organization’s task group on electric security fences, the new standard (F3296) will be the first to specifically address the use of electric security fencing in the commercial market.

DeMao says the new standard will provide users, manufacturers, specifiers, and regulatory bodies with information needed for the safe and effective use of electric fence technology.

“This standard will help accelerate the adoption of electric security fencing in the commercial market at a time when the market is increasingly seeking deterrents rather than detection systems,” says DeMao. “Law enforcement resources are under great strain from increasing demands on their services. Commercial entities, therefore, need greater deterrents to crime.”

The standard was developed by ASTM International’s committee on detention and correctional facilities (F33). To purchase standards, contact customer relations (tel +1.877.909.ASTM; sales@astm.org).
