Standards for Sustainable Asphalt Pavement

Three proposed new ASTM International standards will emphasize the importance of using sustainable materials in the road and paving industry.

The proposed new standards are:

  • WK46376, Specification for Blast Furnace and Steel Furnace Slag as Produced During the Manufacture of Iron and Steel;
  • WK46377, Guide for the Use of Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) in Bituminous Mixtures; and
  • WK46379, Guide for the Use of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in Bituminous Mixtures.

The materials covered by the proposed standards can be used in general pavement construction, such as parking lots and driveways, according to ASTM member John Yzenas, director of technical services, Edward C. Levy Co.

"There are several different types of iron and steel slag," said Yzenas. "WK46376 will provide guidance in characterizing each of these materials for various applications."

Yzenas notes that while many departments of transportation provide specifications for the products covered by WK46377 and WK46379, there is currently little guidance available for non-agency users. The proposed standards will provide this needed information.

Small agencies for cities/municipalities, as well as contractors and engineers, will be the primary users of these standards, once each has been approved.

The trio of proposed standards is being developed by Subcommittee D04.99 on Sustainable Asphalt Pavement Materials and Construction, part of ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials. D04.99 welcomes all participation from interested parties on the development of these standards.

The subcommittee is also looking for other sustainable materials with potential for use in road and paving that could be covered by ASTM standards. The subcommittee would particularly like to receive input from anyone with expertise in the use of sustainable materials in road and paving applications.

In addition to these three proposed standards, D04.99 also welcomes participation in the development of:

  • WK23047, Guide for Existing Standards Relating to Sustainable Construction Materials; and
  • WK24622, Guide for the Use of Foundry Sand in Bituminous Mixtures.
