Artificial Intelligence Policy: ASTM International prohibits the entry of ASTM standards and related ASTM intellectual property (“ASTM IP”) into any form of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT. Additionally, creating ----derivatives of ASTM IP using AI is also prohibited without express written permission from ASTM’s President. In the case of such use, ASTM will suspend a licensee’s access to ASTM IP, and further legal action will be considered.
New Practice for External Loads and Aeroelastic Compliance Demonstration for multimodal VTOL/eVTOL aircraft
1. Scope
The standard intends to provide detailed and recommended best practices and considerations for external loads and aeroelastic compliance demonstration, including analysis and test practices, for common various multimodal VTOL/eVTOL configurations. Standard will intend to recommend common and generally recognized analytical methods that have efficacy for external loads and aeroelasticity, as well as recommended analysis scope guidance based on fundamental assumptions and unique aspects of various multimodal VTOL/eVTOL configurations, also considering common but unique strength and fatigue loads sources and considerations. Subjects will also include structural dynamic / modal interactions, rotordynamic loading, as well as durability considerations on the airframe and systems attachments, given the novel operations and propulsion applications of such aircraft. This practice is intended to provide recommended and generally accepted means, but not the only means, for which compliance demonstration may be shown. This standard will incorporate, by reference, some of the methods of existing FAA and ASTM AC standards with the objective of updating the necessary means of compliance or technical considerations related to the novel loads sources from multimodal VTOL/eVTOL configs. Users will be the similar practicing engineers who are using ASTM F3116, F3115, and F3093 but need more detailed explanation regarding how to better meet the unique and novel nature of multimodal VTOL/eVTOL configurations and better ensure compliance demonstration.
The existing requirements in F3116, F3115 and F3093 were not written considering aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing or mixed vertical and conventional flight, particularly including electrical propulsion aspects. This standard is intended to be used as part of the means of compliance for multimodal VTOL/eVTOL aircraft currently being certified under regulatory requirements related to 14 CFR Part 23/CS-23/Part 27/CS-27 and EASA CS-VTOL.
