New Test Methods for Determining the Susceptibility of Asphalt Mixtures to Cracking Using the Overlay Tester
1. Scope
1 This test method provides a quantitative procedures for determining a failure point in
13 load cycles at 25 ?C (77 ?F) related to the crack failure of asphalt mixture samples subjected
14 to repeated loads using an Overlay Tester. Test specimens can be fabricated from
15 laboratory compacted bituminous mixtures or cores obtained from the pavement.
16 1.1.1 Since a full precision estimate for this standard has not been developed, the test method is to be used
17 for research and informational purposes only. Therefore, this standard should not be used for acceptance
18 or rejection of a material for purchasing purposes.
19 1.2 Units - The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded
20 separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents;
21 therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the
22 two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. An exception is made for
23 the mass of epoxy, which is measured in grams only. Standard inch-pound units for mass of
24 epoxy in these quantities are not commonly used in asphalt mixture laboratories.
25 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any,
26 associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish

Rationale
6 This is a revised draft standard which addresses the issues that were presented on
7 the last ballot.
8 Please review the entire document. It is our intent to have this standard cover a number of different manufacturers of test devices.
9 As such, it will rely on a requirement that each supplier of test equipment must
10 provide an Operations Manual that includes specific details on running the test
11 with that equipment.
12 Please note that this test method is intended to show the
13 relative cracking potential between various asphalt mixes.
14 Once we have a Standard test method that we can use, we will run a full ILS,
15 which will include all currently available test equipment.
16
17 Thank you for a thorough review of this standard. If voting negative, please
18 provide a rationale for the negative vote and suggested language that will help
19 improve the standard.
