Artificial Intelligence Policy: ASTM International prohibits the entry of ASTM standards and related ASTM intellectual property (“ASTM IP”) into any form of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT. Additionally, creating ----derivatives of ASTM IP using AI is also prohibited without express written permission from ASTM’s President. In the case of such use, ASTM will suspend a licensee’s access to ASTM IP, and further legal action will be considered.
New Specification for the Safety and Quality of Cannabinoids Based on Method of Obtention (Source)
1. Scope
The ultimate goal of this effort will be to establish a product certification program comprising a defined set of specifications which clearly distinguish cannabinoids that are “plant-derived” from those that are not, test methods for verifying cannabinoids meet the specifications, a symbol for identifying consumer products containing PLANT-DERIVED cannabinoids, and a means of verifying the symbol both meets specification and has not been counterfeit.
Where I believe we need to start is a specification for plant derived cannabinoids. Plant derived cannabinoids come with other naturally present constituents that are the tell tail signs of being from the plant. Whereas manufactured cannabinoids come with either byproducts of inefficient reactions or are analytically pure. Therefore, it should be relatively easy to develop a specification for "plant derived" cannabinoids which would provide industry and regulators with a means of delineating these cannabinoid-containing products in a way that resonates with consumers.
This product certification program would immediately serve the needs of industry and regulator stakeholders. It would benefit industry by giving licensed operators a way to distinguish their brands and attract consumers looking for all natural plant derived cannabinoids. It would benefit regulators by giving them a mechanism to classify cannabinoids based on the method of obtention (source) and allow them to accurately articulate between naturally occurring cannabinoids and those that are produced through precision fermentation or manufactured or converted. It would benefit the general marketplace by providing a means of protecting it from cases of “canna-fraud”.
