Hunting Saddle Capacity
A proposed ASTM International standard would establish a new test method for static load capacity in hunting saddles. ASTM’s sports equipment, playing surfaces, and facilities committee (F08) is developing the proposed standard.
Saddles offer hunters the ability to view game from an elevated position as an alternative to a tree stand. The saddle is comprised of nylon straps and a mesh seat that attach to the user’s waist and upper legs. Saddles attach to the tree with a rope or tether and allows the user to remain suspended.
During the performance test, static load capacity is the amount of load a hunting saddle and bridge can withstand before yielding, which could lead to sudden and complete failure of the saddle.
The proposed standard test method (WK75939) will cover the determination of the static load capacity of hunting saddles in terms of safety relative to the manufacturers’ rated capacity.
“The first of its kind, this proposed standard seeks to provide unique methodology for testing a hunting saddle under static conditions,” said John Louk, executive director of Treestand Manufacturers Association. “Once approved, the standard will serve as a basis to continue the process of developing additional test methods and specifications for hunting saddles.”
According to Louk, ASTM International member and chair of the subcommittee leading this standard development, the proposed standard will be most useful to manufacturers, retailers, and consumers by providing a broader knowledge of the industry and establishing best practices for safe use of hunting saddles.
