Special Needs Shopping Carts
ASTM International’s consumer products committee (F15) has developed a new standard that addresses performance and safety specifications for special needs shopping carts. Such carts would be used in grocery, drug, discount, and other retail stores.
According to ASTM International member Alan Deal, the intended use of the carts described in the standard is to transport, or assist the transport, of a special needs individual while shopping.
“These carts provide caregivers a viable option to transport a person through a store while shopping, without the impossible task of having to maneuver a wheelchair and a traditional shopping cart at the same time,” says Deal, plant manager, Wanzl North America.
Deal says that shopping cart manufacturers, as well as end users in retail stores will be the primary users of the proposed standard (soon to be published as F3176) once it has been approved.
