SINOPEC Executives Train at ASTM Headquarters

Thirteen executives from SINOPEC Energy of China, the main oil and gas provider in China, participated in an intensive training program on ASTM International processes and its activities in energy-related areas. The training, requested by SINOPEC, was hosted at ASTM International headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa., Sept. 9-13. The delegation consisted of leaders from throughout SINOPEC'S broad-reaching corporate network in multiple Chinese provinces.

The primary subject of the training program was oil standards and their development by ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels and Lubricants. Other subjects covered included standards developed by Committees D16 on Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Related Chemicals and D20 on Plastics.

All aspects of technical committee operations and member participation were highlighted during the training, with many experienced ASTM staff members presenting their areas of expertise. Three site visits rounded out the instruction:

  • The materials recovery facility of Waste Management Inc. in Philadelphia, Pa.;
  • The Intertek laboratory, also in Philadelphia; and
  • The Center for Sustainable Energy, at Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.

Primary funding for the week of intensive training was provided by the SINOPEC company with ASTM covering incidental costs.
