Modumetal, Inc.

Since its founding in 2007, Modumetal Inc. has been at the forefront of technological innovation, forging partnerships with leading organizations in the energy, aerospace, automotive, defense, and construction sectors. As a nanotechnology company based in Seattle, WA, Modumetal has mastered the science and engineering of creating layers of metallic alloy structures on metal substrates at a nanometer-thickness scale.

Modumetal’s core mission is to revolutionize the performance of metals in various industrial applications. Using proprietary control systems to modulate direct current in conjunction with proprietary chemistry and process know-how, the company enhances corrosion protection, wear resistance, and durability. Modumetal’s environmentally friendly, sustainable process surpasses conventional methods, driving significant advancements in materials science.

Modumetal’s technology involves the manipulation of metals at the nanoscale, producing alloys with unprecedented structural and functional properties. By layering metallic alloys at nanometer scales, step function increase in material performance is achieved, offering significant improvements over traditional methods. This innovative approach ensures superior corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and overall durability.

Modumetal’s nanolaminate coating products have been validated and adopted by global leaders in the oil and gas industry, including Exxon, COP, CVX, Shell, Hess, BP, and Enterprise Products. Key products, such as the company’s nanostructured ZiNi and NiCo coatings, are specified and utilized in the most corrosive environments globally.

Modumetal’s commitment to research and development is exemplified by its initiative to propose and lead the efforts to establish new standards for nanostructured coatings. Working closely with ASTM International, Modumetal has worked with the committee for metallic and inorganic coatings (B08) to develop a new standard for nanostructured coatings. Throughout the development of Modumetal’s technology, the company has ensured that its processes, products, and quality systems meet and exceed ASTM standards, including:

  • Standard practice for operating salt spray (fog) apparatus (B117)
  • Standard practice for qualitative adhesion testing of metallic coatings (B571)
  • Standard test method for mechanical hydrogen embrittlement evaluation of plating/coating processes and service environments (F519)
  • Standard test methods for rating adhesion by tape test (D3359)
  • Standard test method for microindentation hardness of materials (E384)
  • Standard test method for measurement of hydrogen embrittlement threshold in steel by the incremental step loading technique (F1624)
  • Standard test method for wear and friction testing with a pin-on-disk or ball-on-disk apparatus (G99)

Modumetal is proud to use nano-layering technology to create nanostructured alloys. As the company continues to advance its research and broaden the applications of its nanolamination technology via a network of licensees worldwide, Modumetal is committed to pushing the envelope of technological advancements in nanolamination of metal alloys and sustainability. ■
