Rationale

A new enameling Type IV is being added to ASTM A424. This new Type is also published in EN 10209 and ISO 5001, however due to some similarities of properties and applications, it has been classified in the same Type as the sheet decarburized, open coil annealed Type product. After much discussion, since this new Type achieves its ultra-low carbon chemistry in the melting operation of the steelmaking process, versus the sheet decarburization, open coil anneal process, ASTM A01.19 subcommittee members have agreed to differentiate this new Type as Type IV to avoid any potential confusion or misinterpretation in the enameling industry.
