F24 Engages Students, China Metrology Program and Professor of the Year Nominations

ASTM Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices regularly engages students who have an interest in the amusement industry. Disney Imagineering's Mike Withers hosted students and industry executives at a student roundtable during the February F24 meetings in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Among those pictured above are three recent graduates who were student members of F24 and are now full members working for ATA Engineering, Universal Orlando and Universal Creative: (front row, left to right) Chris Noveral, The Pennsylvania State University; Eric Kaminsky, Penn State; and Amanda Zielkowski, Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

China University Offers Unique Metrology Program: Partners with ASTM for Training

There are not many university programs devoted to metrology - the science of measurement - and even fewer entire colleges that specialize in the subject. China Jiliang University in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province is the only university in China qualified to offer degrees in quality supervision, inspection and quarantine.

The mission of the university's College of Standardization is to educate a new generation of experts so that metrology better plays its part in China's national development strategy. The four-year metrology degree includes two years of general training on standardization and two years focusing on one of three specializations: material, food safety or service standardization. Graduates are able to develop and implement standards, create a company standardization program, monitor and certify to quality management systems, and evaluate quality test data.

Jiliang University is supported by several government entities that ASTM has partnered with over the years to strengthen both China's and our own standardization programs. In late 2013, a 14-member delegation from Zhejiang Province, including three from Jiliang, attended a four-week intensive training at ASTM headquarters. The group attended training sessions in-house and made site visits to local companies and universities. More recently, ASTM's vice president of global cooperation, Teresa Cendrowska, visited Jiliang and spoke with students about ASTM's standardization process.

Professor of the Year: Nominations Sought

In 2015, ASTM will again honor a distinguished professor with the ASTM International Professor of the Year Award, which recognizes educators' contributions in developing students' understanding of standards.

Both the winning professor and their university will receive an honorarium. Interested parties are requested to submit nominations by Aug. 31. Three independent references are also required.
