ASTM International Awards $10,000 Scholarships to Four 2024 Graduate Students

ASTM International announced the graduate student winners of four $10,000 scholarships for their studies in fields where technical standards play a crucial role. This year’s winners were chosen from a competitive pool of various applicants.

The following candidates will receive the 2024 ASTM International graduate scholarships:
Lane Flora is an applications engineer at Jacobi Carbons, pursuing a master of science degree in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University. Lane is an active member of various ASTM committees, including activated carbon (D28), air quality (D22) and water (D19). She will soon be taking a position as technical director at Jacobi Carbons, using ASTM standards to advance a high standard of quality.

Melissa Armistead is a Ph.D. student in fiber and polymer science at NC State University. Melissa is a member of ASTM’s personal protective clothing and equipment committee (F23), currently using ASTM standards in her work to improve safety and comfort for textiles used in firefighting.

Pandora K. Picariello is a Ph.D. student in materials science at Colorado School of Mines. Pandora plans to use her experience in additive manufacturing with ASTM and NIST at an upcoming internship with Canopy Aerospace, the start of her career in the field.

Vishnu Ramasamy is a Ph.D. student and graduate research assistant in materials science and engineering at Case Western Reserve University. Vishnu is also pursuing a career in additive manufacturing after working with ASTM’s additive manufacturing committee (F42), and hopes to develop standards for hybrid AM processes.

ASTM International has more than 5,000 student members at all levels of education who pay nothing for membership. The organization offers several scholarship and grant opportunities each year. Undergraduate and graduate student members receive a front-row seat to the standards development process, allowing them to network with technical experts and participate in standards discussion.

Request an ASTM Guest Lecture

ASTM International staff and members are readily available to provide students and faculty with an overview of the world of consensus standards. These sessions are designed to expose future subject matter experts to the importance of standards, the development process, resources available to students, and ways to get involved with ASTM.

Lectures can be presented in person or remotely. For more information, visit https://www.astm.org/get-involved/students-and-professors/for-students/memstudent24.html.

Student Project Grant Applications Due Oct. 31

ASTM International offers a limited number of $500 grants to university students to help with student design projects that contain an ASTM International standards component. ASTM will post the results as a student standards application paper on the ASTM website.

Recognizing that students at some universities may need financial assistance in completing their graduate or senior capstone design projects and that the overall demonstration of the existence and understanding of industry standards and applicability to engineering is required, interested students should consider applying.

For the application, student(s) must submit an abstract summary describing the project
that includes:

  • Summarizing the project goal
  • Listing the ASTM standards that are being considered to achieve the project goal
  • Writing a declaration of intention to submit an application paper for publication by ASTM International on completion of the project
  • A statement of endorsement from a faculty mentor

The deadline for project grant applications is Oct. 31. For more information visit go.astm.org/campus.

Applications Sought for Mary Norton Scholarship

Applications are being accepted through December 15 for the Mary R. Norton Memorial Scholarship for Women.

The committee on metallography (E04) sponsors the Norton Scholarship to encourage women undergraduate seniors or first-year graduate students to pursue the study of physical metallurgy or materials science with an emphasis on the relationship of microstructure to material properties.

The $1,000 award is intended to be used for educational expenses during the current academic year. To learn more, visit https://www.astm.org/get-involved/students-and-professors/for-students/memstudent24.html.

ASTM Student Chapter at Central Philippine University Student Chapter Holds First Webinar

ASTM International’s student chapter at Central Philippine University (CPU) held its first webinar on Aug. 9 and 10. The webinar gave students the chance to connect with industry experts. During the webinar, students heard presentations from:

  • Travis Murdock, technical committee operations manager, ASTM
  • Bryan Elliot Williams, chair of ASTM’s packaging committee (D10)
  • Henk P. Blom, chair of ASTM’s primary barrier packaging committee (F02)

The CPU student chapter was launched earlier this year. Committee D10, working closely with the D02 committee, sponsors the chapter. These committees have developed over 150 packaging standards and have more than 600 members.

ASTM began its student chapter program in 2020. In addition to CPU, there are ASTM student chapters at Florida International University; the University of Engineering and Technology in Lima, Peru; the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom; and the Florida Institute of Technology.
