ASTM Announces Project Grant Winners

Each year ASTM International offers a limited number of $500 grants to university students to help with student design projects that contain an ASTM standards component. The 2015 project grant winners are:

  • Andrew Nelson (University of Iowa) - Development of an ASTM International Standard for Polonium-210 in Water.
  • Meredith McQuerry (North Carolina State University) - Heat Transfer Model for Validation of a Heat Loss Test Method in Isothermal Conditions.
  • Mostafa Mohamed (McMaster University) - Additive Manufacturing of Metals.
  • Ebenezer Donkoh (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology) - Study of the Effects of Aging Temperature and Time on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Sand Cast Alloys.
  • Bita Kasra (Milwaukee School of Engineering) - Self-Transfer Assistive Device for Hip and Knee Replacement Patients.

IEEE Invites Professors to Share Standards Education Ideas

IEEE is calling on professors worldwide to contribute to "Practical Ideas from Professors: Standards Education in Your Courses". This online series focuses on ways that educators are incorporating standards into their course work. In each installment of the series, a professor explains how they use standards in their curricula, stressing the practical relevance of standards in the course work.

Professors interested in participating in the series must submit a text document, one to two pages long, that describes how standards are part of their lesson plan. Interested professors should contact Susan Tatiner, IEEE to learn more.

Applications Sought for ASTM Graduate Scholarships

ASTM is now accepting applications for its graduate scholarships. The ASTM International Graduate Scholarship is presented each year to as many as four high potential graduate students, contingent on merit and available funds. The scholarship rewards graduate students who have demonstrated high levels of interest in or involvement with ASTM standards. Each scholarship recipient will receive $10,000 to be used for educational expenses. Applications are due April 30.

ANSI 2016 Student Paper Competition Focuses on "A World without Standards"

The American National Standards Institute is now seeking submissions for its fifth annual student paper competition. ANSI is calling for applicants to submit papers that exemplify the 2016 theme, "A World without Standards."

Submissions are due by April 29, and the competition is open to college or university student(s) at the associate, undergraduate or graduate level enrolled in a U.S. academic institute of higher learning.
