ASTM Aids Students in ACI Competition in Mexico

ASTM International co-sponsored the second American Concrete Institute Mexico Concrete Cylinder Student Competition in May. The competition was held in the laboratory of the Center for Science of Design and Construction of the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes.

ASTM International provided view-only access to all standards necessary to the competition.

The contest featured 16 teams from 12 Mexican universities, with more than 80 civil engineering students involved. The five award categories were compressive strength target, volumetric weight target, cement efficiency, cost and overall performance. The objective was to produce concrete cylinders with an average compressive strength of 30 MPa and a volumetric weight of 2200 kg/m3 with the greatest efficiency and lowest cost elements. In addition to the completed cylinders, teams submitted written reports that explained their process of design and production.
