ASTM and DIN Participate in Exchange Program

Katharine Morgan Visits Deutsches Institut für Normung; Heino Paga Spends Time at ASTM

In late 2010, ASTM International and the Deutsches Institut für Normung, the German Institute for Standardization, held a staff exchange program designed to share information and increase communication between the two organizations.

Heino Paga, project coordinator, DIN process quality, visited ASTM from Sept. 15 to Oct. 9, 2010. During his visit, Paga met with many ASTM staff members to discuss the ASTM standards development process, tools to accelerate collaboration, the development and publication of standards, committee management and quality improvement. Paga also attended ASTM committee meetings, the ASTM Officers' Training Workshop conference sessions and events surrounding the United States celebration of World Standards Day in Washington, D.C.

Katharine Morgan, vice president, ASTM technical committee operations, visited DIN in Berlin, Germany, from Nov. 8 to Nov. 20, 2010. While there, Morgan met with the DIN management team, providing additional information on ASTM International as well as learning about operational areas of DIN, including project management, innovation with standards, standards development metrics, funding models and DIN interaction with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

While in Germany, Morgan attended the annual DIN general assembly, and she also provided a guest lecture on the U.S. standardization system to students enrolled in a course on strategic standardization at the Technische Universität Berlin.
