ASTM and ICPHSO Hold Joint Workshop

ASTM International and the International Consumer Health and Safety Organization teamed up to host a free workshop on Thursday, Oct. 13, in Washington, D.C. Panelists reviewed data from information and education campaigns that cover various consumer products, including pool safety, off-road vehicles, and window coverings.

Discussions focused on the effectiveness of information and education as a hazard mitigation strategy when used alone and in conjunction with other efforts, including product design modification. Panels also discussed best practices related to these campaigns. Elliot Kaye, chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, provided the lunchtime keynote address. Other speakers represented manufacturers, trade associations, consumer advocacy organizations, government, academia, communications,
and technology.

The workshop grew out of discussions related to the creation of the 2015 safety standard for liquid laundry packets (F3159) that was developed by a diverse group of stakeholders in ASTM’s committee on consumer products (F15).
