ASTM and Other Organizations Commemorate Americans with Disabilities Act

ASTM International joined with the National Fire Protection Association, the American National Standards Institute and other members of the standards community to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 on Capitol Hill on Sept. 24. ADA fundamentally changed and improved the way that many Americans access the built environment, transportation, communications and information technology. The event highlighted various standards and subsequent products that have been manufactured for those with disabilities.

One such standard is ASTM F1951, Specification for Determination of Accessibility of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment, which is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee F08.63 on Playground Surfacing Systems, part of ASTM International Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities. F1951 is referenced by the U.S. Access Board, the organization devoted to providing information on accessible designs and the leading source of technical assistance and training on related issues.
