Clemson University Student to Participate in Washington, D.C., Internship Program

WISE Scholar Kathryn Gasparro

ASTM International will sponsor Kathryn Gasparro, a civil engineering student at Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., in the 2012 Washington Internships for Students of Engineering program.

Gasparro's studies in Clemson's civil engineering program are focused on construction management, infrastructure development and transit. In 2011, Gasparro was one of 12 Clemson students selected to participate in education enrichment opportunities focusing on politics, economics, sciences and the arts as a Dixon Global Policy Scholar.

Gasparro plans to focus on public policy related to community development and infrastructure, primarily transportation, during her WISE internship. "Transportation technology and systems are critical to community development, not only on a city or county level, but on a national level," says Gasparro.

Ranked as one of the best internship opportunities in the United States by the Princeton Review, the WISE program is a paid 10-week summer internship in Washington, D.C. The interns are outstanding third- or fourth-year engineering students selected in a nationwide competition. During the program, interns learn about the public policy process, including how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory public policy decisions.
