ASTM Awards Student Grants

Winners to Have Final Papers Posted on ASTM Website

ASTM International has awarded three $500 grants to university students in order to assist them with senior or graduate design projects that contain an ASTM International standards component. In addition to the grants, the winners will have their final papers posted on the ASTM website.

The 2010 winners and their projects are:

  • Xue Liu and Rhoda Kuziez - Saint Louis University

Project: Ergonomic Assessment of Computer Workstations for Students, Employees and Faculty Members at Saint Louis University, School of Public Health

The project team will use the funds to conduct a user survey, conduct a statistical analysis and implement proposed ergonomic solutions. ASTM International standards from Committees E34 on Occupational Health and Safety and E11 on Quality and Statistics will be referenced.

  • Paul Sisneros and Peng Yang - University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee

Project: Investigations of Carbon Fiber Bicycle Forks for ASTM Standard Development

The goal of the project is to advance the knowledge of failure processes in carbon fiber bicycle parts and to advance the ASTM International test standards currently under development. The study will incorporate several ASTM International standards from Subcommittee F08.10 on Bicycles, part of Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities.

  • Manik Pavan Maheswaram, Dhruthiman R. Mantheni and Shravan Singh Thakur - Cleveland State University

Project: Universal Standard Protocol for Temperature and Material Characterization Calibration with Pharmaceuticals

The project goal is to develop a test procedure based on multiple thermal analytical methods and extend the selection of calibrants to active pharmacy ingredients. The work will incorporate ASTM International standards from Committees E37 on Thermal Measurements and E11 on Quality and Statistics.The project grant program continues this year with a Sept. 30 deadline for the 2011 project grant applications.
