ASTM Co-Sponsors Congressional Briefing on Water Conservation
On Sept. 13, ASTM International co-sponsored a briefing, "Saving Water in the Interior of a Building," for congressional staff and members of the U.S. Congress on Capitol Hill. The briefing highlighted the need for increased efficiency of water use in bathrooms and kitchens.
Programs such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WaterSense are geared to help consumers purchase products that increase water efficiency while maintaining performance. According to WaterSense, about eight percent of U.S. energy demand goes to treating, pumping and heating water and is equal to enough electricity to power more than five million homes for an entire year. Heating water accounts for 19 percent of home energy use and 13 percent of the average utility bill.
Donald C. Devine, CEO, American Standard Brands, discussed in detail how their products meet or exceed specifications, some of which are ASTM International standards. Devine stated, "Our goal is to educate consumers that conservation can and does begin at home; by developing water-efficient, low consumption toilets, faucets and shower heads that actually work, we are providing consumers with real choice in creating responsible bathrooms without sacrifice in style or performance."
