High School Visit Marks National Engineers Week

ASTM International Celebrates Engineers

James Olshefsky, director of external relations at ASTM International, visited Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, Plymouth Meeting, Pa., on Feb. 20 to help celebrate National Engineers Week. Olshefsky introduced students to the world of standardization and encouraged their interest in engineering. ASTM is a longtime sponsor of Engineers Week, held this year Feb. 17-23.

ASTM staff worked with Jim Muscarella, Plymouth Whitemarsh science department head, and Maria Wileczek, science curriculum supervisor, Colonial School District, to organize the event. Junior and senior level students who are currently enrolled in an engineering program at the school received an overview of ASTM from Olshefsky.

Following Olshefsky via Web conference was David Cooper, a consultant with SL Ross Environmental Research Ltd., Greely, Calif., and a member of ASTM Committee F20 on Hazardous Substances and Oil Spill Response. Cooper's presentation was focused on full-scale testing of oil skimmers, a topic that coincided with an oil spill simulation project in which the students were engaged.

Plymouth Whitemarsh High School is located near ASTM International headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa.
