ASTM International Chairman Speeaks at New York's City College
Mary McKiel Stresses Importance of Standards in Education
Mary C. McKiel, Ph.D., 2013 chairman of ASTM International's board of directors, attended an informational day organized by the alumni group of the City College of New York. The audience consisted of undergraduate and graduate students attending the Environmental Site Assessments – Phase II course taught by Angelo Lampousis, Ph.D.. Lampousis is a member of ASTM Committees D18 on Soil and Rock and E50 on Environmental Assessment, Risk Management and Corrective Action.
In her address, McKiel stressed the importance of standards and standardization in educating students as they enter the work force. She described ASTM's standards development process, using examples from her experience as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards executive to reinforce her points.
In addition to McKiel, ASTM was represented at the City College event by Christopher P. McCormack, Pullman and Comley LLC, Bridgeport, Conn., who is chairman of the ASTM task group revising ASTM standard E1903, Practice for Environmental Site Assessments: Phase II Environmental Site Assessment Process. E1903 is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee E50.02 on Real Estate Assessment and Management, part of ASTM International Committee E50.
