Stoller, Fields Present to University Classes

ASTM Members Visit College Campuses

Roger Stoller, a nuclear scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and current ASTM chairman of the board, made a presentation about ASTM International and the use of standards to a class at the University of Tennessee on March 3.

The class on nuclear systems design is taught by Martin Grossbeck and is a requirement for all seniors in nuclear and radiological engineering. The class is divided into design teams who all work on the same design project, proposing different solutions.

On March 26, Richard Fields, past chairman of ASTM International Committee D30 on Composite Materials, spoke to a class at the University of Mississippi via a conference call. Fields gave an overview of ASTM and spoke in detail about D30 standards. Ten students participated in the call, which was held during a class on characterization of polymeric composites taught by Ellen Lackey of the mechanical engineering department.

Lackey, who uses ASTM standards in her class through the ASTM Standards on Campus program, said the conference call was "an excellent opportunity for the students to hear about real-world applications of topics that we had discussed in the classroom."
