ASTM Staff Member Visits South American Colleges
Peru and Chile College Representatives Meet with ASTM Staff Member
James Olshefsky, director external relations, ASTM International, visited two colleges during a trip to South America in May.
On May 9, Olshefsky met with José Carlos Flores Molina, director, Intitute for Quality, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru in Lima, Peru. During this visit, several key professors met with Olshefsky to talk about the benefits of standards education. The university has online access to ASTM standards and uses them almost exclusively in the relevant curricula. In addition, the school is part of a pilot project to deliver an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation course covering standardization and to provide feedback on the course. The following day, Olshefsky visited with Mauricio Lopez, associate dean of undergraduate studies, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, Chile. Lopez, also an ASTM International member, noted that his graduate students are the ones most likely to use ASTM standards in the laboratory. Olshefsky and Lopez discussed the tools and resources available for students, including sample curricula that can be found at www.astm.org/studentmember/Peer_to_peer_courses.html.
