ASTM Staff Visits NIST Building and Fire Research Laboratory

ASTM met with the leadership and staff of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Building and Fire Research Laboratory in Gaithersburg, Md., on March 19.

BFRL Director Shyam Sunder and BFRL Deputy Director William Grosshandler hosted the ASTM staff delegation, which included Jeffrey Grove from the ASTM Washington, D.C., office as well as Katharine Morgan, Pat Picariello, Stephen Mawn and Thomas O'Toole, all from ASTM Technical Committee Operations.

The informational exchange included presentations by NIST on BFRL programs, including:

  • Net-zero energy high performance buildings;
  • Advancing infrastructure delivery;
  • Sustainable infrastructure materials;
  • Innovative fire protection; and
  • Disaster-resilient structures and communities.

ASTM staff provided information on standards activities in the areas of buildings, sustainability and sustainable building materials, fire, three-dimensional imaging and the relationship between ASTM standards and the new International Green Construction Code Public Version 1.0.

The relationship between ASTM and the BFRL remains very strong, and numerous technical experts from NIST are actively engaged in ASTM technical committees.
