ASTM Staff Make Presentations at Several Events

During a trip to China June 23-28, ASTM International staff member Pat Picariello made presentations at several Chinese organizations to describe some of the cutting edge standards development activities currently happening at ASTM. Picariello is a director at ASTM, as well as the staff manager for committees whose work was predominant in the presentations: ASTM Committee E57 on 3D Imaging Systems and F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies.

During his presentations, Picariello was joined by Liu Fei, ASTM chief representative in China, and Nancy Hu, ASTM China office operations manager. The trio's first presentation was to more than 50 ASTM members at the Shanghai offices of ASTM's cooperative partner, the Shanghai Institute of Standardization.

Next, Picariello spoke at the Shanghai Industrial Technology Institute, which is affiliated with the Shanghai Academy of Sciences. SITI is authorized to coordinate 3D printing industrialization and integration among 100 different institutes, many of which are affiliated with universities. Picariello's presentation on how standards can bridge the gap between research and the marketplace was well-received by the SITI audience.

Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi'an, the site of Picariello's next speech, is home to a 3D printing facility for titanium. At NWPU, the ASTM staff members were hosted by Professor Weidong Huang, a member of the 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing journal editorial board. The presentation made by staff to Professor Huang, his colleagues and students focused on ASTM's standards development process, membership benefits and how to present a proposal for a new standard.

Finally, Picariello had been invited to participate at the first Annual World Congress of 3D Printing in Dalian, where he gave a presentation titled, "Collaborative Standards Development for Additive Manufacturing: ASTM International Committee F42 and ISO TC261." In addition to an introduction to ASTM and a brief history of F42 and its standards portfolio, the presentation covered the rationale for the partnership between F42 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 261 on Additive Manufacturing, an overview of the partner standards developing orgranization cooperation agreement and a discussion of the anticipated path forward for the standards partners.
