Global Policy Vice President Joins Discussion at U.S. Patent and Trade Office

On Sept. 9, Jeff Grove, vice president of global policy and industry affairs, ASTM, participated in a panel session that was part of a Study Tour on Intellectual Property Protection and Innovation organized for a Chinese delegation by the U.S. Patent and Trade Office of Policy and International Affairs.

The program provided participants with information on the various approaches to standards development in the United States and the limited but important contributory role of government in the private sector-driven U.S. standardization system. Key concepts illustrated during the panel session included:

  • The range of standards development approaches that are practiced in the United States, which provide for flexibility and relevance to meet stakeholder needs;
  • The common elements that underpin standards development in the United States;
  • How innovation is supported and incentivized by open, transparent and balanced standards development approaches; and
  • The respective roles of the private sector and government in U.S. standards development and use.
