Legislation to Reduce Cigarette Fires Now Passed in All States

ASTM Fire Safety Performance Standard Provides Basis for Safety Testing

Legislation aimed at reducing the number of cigarette fires and fire fatalities has now been passed in all 50 of the United States. In March, Governor Dave Freudenthal signed a law requiring that all cigarettes sold in Wyoming must meet a specific fire safety standard as of July 2011.

Having such legislation passed in all states has been the goal of the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes since its founding in March 2006. ASTM International is a member of the coalition, which has called on cigarette manufacturers to produce and market cigarettes that adhere to an established fire safety performance standard that is based on ASTM E2187, Test Method for Measuring the Ignition Strength of Cigarettes.
