Outreach Days

ASTM Staff Members Visit Members and Potential Members Throughout Philadelphia Area

ASTM International affirmed the importance of its volunteer membership during its Outreach Days initiative, held Sept. 21–22. During this event, ASTM staff traveled to the facilities of ASTM members throughout the Philadelphia region.

While individual visits were tailored to member interests, the general goals of Outreach Days were to:

  • Identify current topics and trends in industry;
  • Engage potential new stakeholders in the standards development process;
  • Strengthen relationships with current members and potential new members; and
  • Take the opportunity to offer appreciation to upper management at these companies for their role in supporting standards development activities (funding, enabling employee representation on committees and more).

Teams involving more than 30 ASTM staff members made 18 visits in locations that ranged from Wayne, N.J., to Newark, Del., with stops in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. During the outreach event, ASTM International staff met with more than 100 representatives of the 18 organizations. Staff made presentations to company leaders and technical staff members in a manner that allowed for an open dialogue.

In addition to the briefings, many organizations gave ASTM staff members tours of their facilities. This was an excellent opportunity to see ASTM International standards in action and for ASTM staff to gain an appreciation for their members' "day jobs."

In addition to the visits, ASTM sponsored an Outreach Days reception on the evening of Sept. 21 at ASTM headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa. The reception featured a number of displays from various ASTM departments.

A number of organizations were not available on the two days set aside for the event, so additional post-Outreach Days visits are planned. ASTM welcomes the opportunity to arrange a visit with anyone who is interested in having staff come to their organization.
