Rhode Island Becomes First State to Adopt International Green Construction Code
IGCC Co-Sponsored by ASTM International
Rhode Island has become the first state to adopt the International Green Construction Code. The state's Green Buildings Act identifies the IGCC as an equivalent standard in compliance with requirements that all public agency major facility projects be designed and constructed as green buildings. The rules and regulations to implement the act took effect in October.
The IGCC, subtitled "Safe and Sustainable by the Book," addresses green building design and performance and applies to new and existing, traditional and high performance commercial buildings. Launched in 2009 by the International Code Council, the IGCC is co-sponsored by ASTM International, the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the Illuminating Engineering Society and the U.S. Green Building Council.
