Positioning ASTM International for the Future

An organization can’t merely adapt to change. It must anticipate it.

One of the key reasons ASTM International has continued to grow and thrive for 120 years is that we have thought carefully about the structure of our organization and the dynamic team of people within it.
Over the past two years, our staff — with support from an outside consulting organization — has been highly focused on this.

By and large, we concluded that we are indeed well-positioned for the future. We remain on the cutting edge, with tools, resources, and a strong vision befitting one of the world’s leading developers of standards and standards-related products and services.

That said, a few updates were needed.

For example, given the deep integration of technology in ASTM operations and products, we thought that it was important to bring a seasoned technology executive onto the senior staff team. That’s why we hired Richard Lindberg as vice president and chief information officer to oversee a division we call IT Operations and Content Curation. Rick brings 25 years of senior technology experience, most recently at Guardian Life Insurance Co., to this role.

Another example: We have created a new division called Product Development and Management, which will oversee the development and management of tools, programs, and products with the support of business analysts and analytics. Additional resources and a concentrated focus in this area will allow us to be responsive, nimble, and innovative. It will be led by vice president Phil Lively.

In addition:

  • Our Finance and Administration division has been merged with Business Development to leverage long-term vision and innovation strategy with fiscal resources and management. This division will be led by vice president Brian Meincke, who was also recently appointed treasurer of the organization.
  • Laboratory services and certification will be its own division under vice president Tim Brooke. Tim works closely with Pat Gleason, president of the Safety Equipment Institute, to leverage program opportunities.
  • Our Sales and Marketing division will be led by vice president Jim Thomas. Jim recently was promoted to this position after serving as assistant vice president of publications and marketing.
  • John Pace will serve as senior vice president, overseeing various aspects of operations and special projects until his recently announced retirement in early 2020.

Most importantly, this organizational realignment positions us to work for you and with you — our members, customers, partners, and stakeholders — better than ever before. I encourage you to reach out to me or anyone on our team at any time with your questions, thoughts, and suggestions about how we can better collaborate to fulfill ASTM International’s mission of helping the world work better for many years to come.
