Antimicrobial Additives in Concrete

A new standard developed by ASTM International’s concrete pipe committee (C13) is the first standard test for determining the effectiveness of antimicrobial additives on the corrosion of concrete.

“This standard presents test methods to help determine effects of biogenic acidification on concrete products and/or the efficacy of antimicrobial products to resist microbially-induced corrosion in concrete,” says Mel Marshall, president of Mel C. Marshall Industrial Consultants, Inc.

According to Marshall, the standard is vital to the concrete-pipe and sanitary sewer industry because it will aid the development of solutions to prevent microbially-induced corrosion in concrete.

Marshall notes the new standard, published as C1904, will help additive manufacturers, concrete producers, and specifying agencies to determine the effectiveness of a particular additive to mitigate the effects of microbially-induced corrosion.
