ASTM International Hires Cannabis Standards Consultant

ASTM International has hired Charles P. Rutherford, II, of CPR Squared, Inc., as a technical consultant to support standards development and related activities for the organization’s cannabis committee (D37).

Rutherford will create an outreach strategy to: engage more cannabis-related organizations and networks, liaise with existing standardization activities, help prioritize and strategize a focused approach to standards development, and more.

Rutherford spent more than seven years as the business development director for Boveda, Inc., a manufacturerthat specializes in humidity control products for tobacco, herbal medicine, food, wood instruments, and other applications. He is on the board of the American Trade Association for Cannabis and Hemp (ATACH).

“ASTM International standards have shaped the world around us in nearly every industry you can name, and they will play a key role in the fast-evolving cannabis industry,” said Rutherford. “I’m excited to work with an organization where anyone can come to the table and have a voice in the future of our field by participating in D37.”

Rutherford will play a key role in working with the more than 500 members of the committee, which launched in 2017 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In addition, he will support existing ASTM International partnerships with groups such as ATACH as well as the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance (CHTA), the Europe-based International Cannabis and Cannabinoids Institute (ICCI), the Foundation of Cannabis Unified Standards (FOCUS), and the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA).
