ASTM International Standard Underway to Help Reduce Hazards in Cannabis Processing
Members of the ASTM International cannabis committee (D37) are proposing a standard for managing and implementing what are called “hazard analysis critical control points”(HACCP) systems for cannabis processing.
HACCP systems are already used in the food industry to prevent, control, or reduce to an acceptable levelpotential hazards to consumers.
“These systems can apply to manufacturing extracted and infused cannabis products, to prevent, control, or reduce to an acceptable level biological, chemical, and physical hazards,” says Radojka Barycki, co-owner of Nova Compliance.
According to Barycki, this guide (WK64674) could be useful to the growing number of manufacturers in the cannabis industry that are unaware of the concept of HACCP systems and want to create and implement a plan to prevent, control, or reduce to an acceptable level hazards within their products. She adds that cannabis regulators may also find the standard useful.
