ASTM Proficiency Testing Program Gains Six Additional Accreditations; Launches New Program

ASTM International has launched a new Proficiency Testing Program to help labs accurately test the combustion speed of diesel fuel and the compression it needs to ignite, also known as cetane. The PTP has also gained additional accreditations from the globally-recognized American Association for Laboratory Accreditation for six existing programs.

Generally, PTP programs help petroleum labs evaluate, improve, and document performance in conducting test methods.

The new cetane PTP will help labs meet accreditation requirements — and ultimately enhance the quality of diesel fuels — by providing data that shows how their performance of ASTM International test methods compares with others.

Enrolled labs will measure the characteristics of one gallon of diesel fuel using four test methods. This test sample will come from refineries, storage facilities, storage tanks, and pipelines. The sample will be stable and homogeoneous, with physical and chemical properties similar to typical samples.

Along with the samples, each participating lab receives test instructions and data report forms. Labs will be able to measure cetane number (D613), derived cetane numbers (D6890, D7170, D7668), and other diesel fuel quality properties.

The program also includes electronic statistical summary reports and 24/7 online access to a customized portal. The first cycle is in October, with more cycles in February and June. Click here to register.

Separately, A2LA expanded accreditation to six existing ASTM International PTPs:

  • Biodiesel,
  • Base oil,
  • Hydraulic fluids and oils,
  • Lubricating greases,
  • Motor gasoline and
  • Reformulated gasoline.

This adds to the six programs that achieved A2LA accreditation in April, ranging from automated transmission fluid to industrial gear oil.

Programs accredited through A2LA are assessed against criteria from a key standard: Conformity Assessment – General Requirements for Proficiency Testing (ISO/IEC 17043:2010). A2LA is the only independent, internationally-recognized accreditation body in the U.S. that offers a full range of comprehensive laboratory and laboratory-related accreditation services and training.

About 5,000 laboratories use ASTM’s statistical quality assurance tools in the proficiency testing programs.
