ASTM International’s sports equipment, playing surfaces, and facilities committee (F08) has developed a new standard, F3641, on child bicycle carriers.

F3641 provides clear specifications on front-mounted child bicycle carriers, located between the rider and handlebars of a bike. These bicycle carriers transport children with a minimum weight of 12 kg and a maximum weight of 27 kg who are capable of sitting unaided.

According to ASTM member Tom Hayward, the option for approval under ASTM standards will provide a crucial marker of safety for consumers seeking out these child carriers.

“For years this product category has been in a grey area of bicycle safety, but this standard communicates to consumers and retailers that it can be legitimate and safe,” notes Hayward. “The standard will also be used by manufacturers as a design and testing guideline, providing laboratories with safety testing parameters.”
