Bridge Cable
ASTM International’s steel, stainless steel, and related alloys committee (A01) is developing a proposed standard that will help guide manufacturers of wire rods and galvanized steel wire and cable that are crucial to the construction of bridges.
“As the key and control parts of a road system, bridges play an important role in modern traffic,” says ASTM International member Yun Bai, of organizational member Jiangyin Xingcheng Special Steel Works Co., Ltd. “Bridge cable is the main stress component whose technical requirements are demanding and special.”
The wire rods and cables described in the proposed standard are particularly important for bridges with long spans across rivers, lakes, seas, and mountains.
The proposed standard will promote the development of key basic materials, the application of new processes and technologies in the cable industries, and the acceleration of the development of bridge cables.
The proposed standard will also help to establish the link of scientific research, production, and market between the wire rod production and galvanized steel wire/cable industries in furthering the technical progress of high strength wire rod production.
This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
“The proposed standard will guide the development of products in the direction of higher strength and safety, promote reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, as well as simplify bridge structure and investment,” says Bai.
The task group developing the proposed standard (WK58959) welcomes global participation from related scientific research institutions, wire rod manufacturing enterprises, and galvanized steel wire and cable manufacturers. JOIN ASTM.
