Butt Fusion Joints

A new ASTM International standard will help determine procedures for making butt fusion joints with Polyamide 12 (PA12) pipe and fitting by means of heat fusion joining. ASTM’s plastic piping systems committee (F17) developed the standard, which will soon be published as F3372.

According to ASTM International member Jim Mason, of Mason Materials Development LLC, “Having an industry consensus standard method for heat fusion joining improves safety and provides a consistent set of requirements for joining that can be inspected and certified by regulatory authorities.”

PA12 pipe and butt fusion fittings that are within the dimensional tolerances given in their respective ASTM specifications are required to produce sound joints when using the joining techniques described in this practice.

The new standard will be used by public utilities, manufacturers, contractors, inspectors, and by regulatory authorities overseeing the gas distribution network.
