Electrode Potential Measurement

A new ASTM International standard will be used to help measure the potential for metal corrosion in aquatic environments such as piers, docks, vessels, and pipelines transporting natural gas and other flammable fluids at high pressure. The new standard (G215, Guide to Electrode Potential Measurement) will lead to a better understanding of electrode potential measurement.

"The new standard should be useful for engineers and technicians who are responsible for the safety and performance of pipelines, structures and vessels," says ASTM member Sheldon Dean, Jr., president, Dean Corrosion Technology, Inc. "It will also be helpful in teaching corrosion technology, both at a practical and theoretical level."

Committee G01 and subcommittee G01.11 welcome all interested professionals to help develop standards to battle corrosion damage. A symposium has been scheduled for November 2017 in Atlanta to review electrochemical methods in use or being developed in order to discover other standards needed.

To purchase standards, visit www.astm.org and search by the standard designation, or contact ASTM Customer Relations (tel +1.877.909.ASTM; sales@astm.org). ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN.
