Ergonomic Guidelines for Exoskeletons

A proposed ASTM International standard would help provide functional ergonomic guidelines for the design, construction, and use of exoskeletons. ASTM’s committee on exoskeletons and exosuits (F48) is developing the proposed standard (WK73074).

“Use of an exoskeleton may magnify existing ergonomic risk factors or introduce new ergonomic hazards,” says ASTM International member Delia Treaster, ergonomic technical advisor, Ohio BWC. “This guide seeks to inform users of potential hazards and provide guidance on how to assess the hazards.”

The guidelines included in the proposed standard will help to reduce the risk of injuries or illnesses that could result from repeated trauma or repetitive motions associated with exoskeleton use within the domains of industry, military, medical, first responders, and recreation.
