A proposed ASTM International standard aimed at improving the safety of self-balancing scooters, more commonly known as hoverboards, was issued this morning for committee vote. 

The proposed standard consumer safety specification for self-balancing scooters (WK57360) seeks to provide performance requirements and corresponding test methods for self-balancing scooters and intends to reduce hazards during normal use within manufacturers safety guidelines.

Members of the ASTM International consumer product committee (F15) can now review the standard, offer input, or vote for it to be approved. Public comments are also accepted.

According to Dave Dick, senior technical engineer technical services, Bureau Veritas, and ASTM International member, the proposed standard includes age and speed requirements for both children and adults in an effort to improve occupant safety during use.

If approved, the proposed draft will become an international standard but is also intended to besubmitted as a National Standard of Canada under the auspices of the Standards Council of Canada, of which ASTM International is accredited. Through this process, members of the Canadian public are also invited to provide feedback on the suitability of this standard to address Canadian safety issues. Information on this process can be found HERE.
