Loss on Ignition Testing for Pigment Manufacturers
Pigment manufacturers use the loss on ignition test to determine the extent of water of hydration or crystallized water. While loss on ignition is a frequently used test, its methodology is embedded within other standards and varies from one to another.
Now, a proposed new ASTM International standard, WK46877, Test Method for Pigment Loss on Ignition, will provide definitive instructions for conducting this common test.
"Manufacturers will use the results of testing as a means for product validation," says Steven Brunner, application chemist, WPC Technologies. "For example, in the realm of anticorrosive pigment, WK46877 will serve as a means to estimate the amount of active portion in the pigment." Brunner also notes that the test will be used to determine both the acceptable and detrimental levels of water for different types of pigments.
WK46877 is being developed by Subcommittee D01.31 on Pigment Specifications, part of ASTM Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications. Interested parties are invited to join in the standards developing activities of D01.31. In addition to WK46877, the subcommittee is considering the development of a standard for pigment grind method.
