New Guide Will Help Manufacturers of Sand, Gravel, Other Particulates

A new ASTM International standard will help manufacturers of particulates, such as sand, gravel, and grit, to better measure their products.

According to ASTM International member Paul O’Brien, engineering manager at JM Canty, the new guide explains a way to correlate different types of instruments that measure solid-particle distributions. Using the new standard will help expand the capability of particle measurement throughout the manufacturing process and bring better control and efficiency to that process.

“For instance, adding a measuring instrument mid-process may be more suitable than sampling for a sieve measurement. If the instrument can be correlated to the sieve result then it is likely a more timely feedback of product parameters can be achieved resulting in control of the process with a greater degree of certainty,” says O’Brien.

The new standard (E2776) was developed by ASTM International’s committee on particle and spray characterization (E29).
