New Guide Will Help Petroleum Industry in Choosing Test Methods

A new ASTM International guide will help test method users select the most appropriate test methods to meet their measurement application needs for properties of petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants.

According to James Bover, an industry consultant and ASTM International member, the guide will help users evaluate and compare the relative performance of different tests that measure the same property.

Bover says that the guide outlines strategies that help evaluate to what extent a test method will provide a sufficiently precise measurement.  He adds that the guide also helps assess the fitness of use of a test method related to its reproducibility, helping products meet certain specifications, regulations, or manufacturing limits.

The standard (D8146) was developed by ASTM’s committee on petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (D02), under its subcommittee on quality and statistics (D02.94).
