A new ASTM International standard will help businesses and government agencies determine whether drivers are qualified to safely and effectively operate snowmobiles in the field. The new standard (soon to be published as F3221, Guide for Training for Snowmobile Operators Endorsement) was developed by ASTM’s committee on search and rescue (F32).

“Snowmobiles are used in a wide variety of business and government operations, including search and rescue,” says ASTM member Steve Hudson, vice president, Maine Association for Search and Rescue. “The new standard has been created to define the minimum requirements for training all personnel who operate snowmobiles.”

Government, corporate, and volunteer organizations that use snowmobiles as part of their regular operations will all find the new standard useful. In addition, regulatory bodies will be able to use the standard when setting minimum requirements for personnel in federal, state, and local governments.
