 A new ASTM International standard will help designers and manufacturers develop and build safe attractions that simulate surfing. The new standard (soon to be published as F3133, Practice for the Classification, Design, Manufacture, Construction, and Operation of Standing Wave Systems) was developed by ASTM’s committee on amusement rides and devices (F24). 

ASTM member Marshall Myrman is the leader of Flow Rider Inc., part of WhiteWater West Industries. Myrman says that companies such as water parks that buy stationary wave systems will use the standard to help determine the safety of the system being considered. 

The new standard provides manufacturing guidelines, including structural design requirements, identification markings, and design responsibilities. According to Myrman, regulatory agencies might also use the standard as an enforcement tool while laboratories will find it helpful for benchmark testing.
