Plastic Films

Manufacturers of raw plastic materials and plastic films – as well as those who buy and use them – will benefit from a uniform, systematic approach to classify and specify plastic films. The new standard (D8065, Classification System and Basis for Specification for Specifying Plastic Films) was developed by the committee on plastics (D20) at ASTM International.

“Plastic films are used in a wide range of applications, including packaging of consumer products as well as in agriculture, medical packaging, and industrial films,” says ASTM member Fred Boldt of TechPlas Consulting LLC. “This new standard provides a uniform way to classify all of those films.”

According to Boldt, this new standard serves as the foundation for additional standards that will address various classes of films based on their composition, such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Interested parties with expertise in these areas are encouraged to join in the development of these standards.

To purchase standards, visit www.astm.org and search by the standard designation, or contact ASTM Customer Relations (tel +1.877.909.ASTM; sales@astm.org). ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN.
