Preformed Thermoplastic Pavement Marking Materials

Standard covers pavement markings like directional symbols, pedestrian crossings, and parking emblems.

A new standard (D8584) from ASTM's traffic coatings subcommittee (D01.44) will provide guidance for evaluating the quality and consistency of preformed thermoplastic pavement marking materials. Such materials are used to place interstate symbols and directional symbols in the middle of roads and airport runways, to designate pedestrian crossings, and to mark parking spaces, among other applications.

This new guide was developed by the traffic coatings subcommittee (D01.44) of ASTM International’s paint and related coatings, materials, and applications (D01). The guide covers compositional and physical properties with appropriate sampling, sample preparation, and test methods recommended when assessing preformed thermoplastic pavement marking materials.

“The new standard can be used as informational for anyone involved in manufacturing, purchasing, or installation of preformed thermoplastic,” says ASTM member David Entrekin, owner, Future Labs LLC. “Within this guide, we hope to explain why certain test methods are useful for preformed thermoplastic pavement markings relative to the use and performance needs of the product.”

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
