Recycled Resins in Corrugated Pipe
A proposed new ASTM International standard will provide assurance regarding the quality of high density polyethylene corrugated pipe using recycled resins. WK39632, Specification for 3 Through 24 Inch Corrugated Polyethylene Pipe and Fittings with Recycled Resins, is being developed by Subcommittee F17.65 on Land Drainage, part of ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems.
The proposed standard includes requirements for materials, workmanship, dimensions, perforations and pipe stiffness.
Once approved, WK39632 will be used by manufacturers to make pipes from recycled materials for end users such as excavation contractors and farmers. Some types covered in WK39632 are used for basic drainage needs.
"WK39632 will specify the types of materials used, the quality of recycled material, the amount of contaminants allowed and long-term testing to ensure the end user has a quality product," says Douglas Baker, engineering manager, Springfield Plastics Inc., and an F17 member.
